A Grateful Heart Matters - In the Classroom and Beyond

Thursday, November 07, 2019 by The Program for Inclusive Education

Program for Inclusive Education at the University of Notre Dame

We are called to welcome, serve, and celebrate every student.

That is our motto at the Program for Inclusive Education, and the goal to which every inclusive educator aspires. Moreover, we pray that all Catholic schools will embrace this mission by opening their doors to those academically on the margins and by supporting students so their God-given potential shines. Being grateful for what we have is the key to truly giving. PIE is grateful for what you have–your heart of inclusion!

A Place at the Table - Program for Inclusive Education at the University of Notre Dame

“We are better together…Everyone has ideas to bring to the table!  To be inclusive reminds us of what it means to walk like Christ did.”

And Just Like That...There Were 2!

I’m not sure how it happened...but it is fall in South Bend, and the University of Notre Dame has renewed energy. People are walking to and from class and events, instruction and research are underway, the reverence of spiritual formation is powerful, and Irish football posted a “W” against Louisville in the season opener. Campus is alive and well after a short-lived summer break.

It All Begins by Being Open

The Program for Inclusive Education is grateful to share a special message from Diane Freeby, a colleague of the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame. This piece highlights our Blessed Mother during the month of May. It also explores the good works of Doreen Engel-a long time educator and champion of inclusion, and an adjunct faculty member at the Andrew M. Greeley Center, Loyola University Chicago. It is PIE’s privilege to collaborate with faithful educators across the country who support and advocate for inclusion in Catholic schools. There is much to be done with this mission and the partnerships are valued. Thank you both for your gracious efforts!

In-Sites for Inclusion: Better than Pinterest!

Thursday, January 31, 2019 by Christine Bonfiglio, Ph.D.

The Program for Inclusive Education (PIE) advocates for best practices in meeting the needs of all learners. With many resources available at the click of a mouse, PIE encourages you to look for and implement frameworks, strategies, and interventions that are backed by research and proven to be effective. The following resource provides a synthesis of websites featuring evidence-based practices. It is PIE’s gift to you for 2019. Many thanks to my national colleagues and members of the PIE faculty for their combined authorship on this resource: Dr. Michael Faggella-Luby of Texas Christian University and Dr. Sean J. Smith of the University of Kansas.

Burning Down Barns - Program for Inclusive Education

The Program for Inclusive Education’s (PIE) first cohort completed programming in July and embarked on their mission of inclusive education following an energizing two-week capstone experience on the campus of Notre Dame. It was a time of spiritual retreat, community unification, and comprehensive instruction after a year of online programming. The experience was filled with joyous convergence, passionate advocacy, and humble gratitude. Nacia Hatch lived this inaugural experience and was introduced in the August Blog. It is my privilege to share her thoughts following her journey with PIE. Many thanks for Nacia’s guest authorship and all she is doing to welcome, serve, and celebrate all students!
