By: Kathleen Rocks
Ms. Moira Coomes has been named Superintendent of Schools for the Red Cloud Indian School. Coomes, the first woman to hold this job, will oversee the three schools in the Red Cloud School System.
Prior to her appointment as superintendent, Coomes served as the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. During Coomes' time at Red Cloud, she has helped spur the school to unprecedented academic achievements, and was integral in developing the school’s college readiness programs; the $2 million awarded to graduating seniors in 2017 is a testament to her talent and dedication. Coomes also led the school’s initiative to develop its K-12 Lakota language program which honors the culture, spirituality, and identity of Red Cloud’s Lakota students.
When Coomes arrived at Red Cloud, she brought with her 25 years of experience in school administration and innovative curriculum development. Coomes’ insight and experience have impacted the Red Cloud School System in countless ways. Under her leadership, the school has implemented data-driven assessment systems to strengthen teaching and expanded professional development opportunities for all of Red Cloud’s teachers.
Coomes is excited to take on this new role. “I’m looking forward to helping our administrators and teachers come together as a team, to create a vision for where we want to be in five years, and then to implement a plan to get us there,” said Coomes. “The amazing work we’re doing at Red Cloud—like revitalizing the Lakota language—speaks to the strength of our collective commitment to innovative education. Working together, there isn’t any challenge we can’t take on.”
