Destruction from the earthquake in Haiti
ACE began exploring opportunities to support Catholic schools and the mission of Holy Cross in Haiti in 2006. When the 2010 earthquake devastated Haiti, ACE responded by helping to rebuild Basile Moreau, a flagship, K-12 Holy Cross School in Port-au-Prince, and also began a broader engagement with Haiti’s system of Catholic schools. Forming a sustained partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Haiti’s Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education (CEEC), ACE Haiti and its partners have emerged as leading educational reform, research, and programmatic actors in the Haitian context. ACE Haiti is now driving cutting education policy, practice, and applied research in early grade literacy. Our work has yielded the most promising improvements in student literacy outcomes at scale seen for a project in the Haitian context to date. Our impact over the past 7 years includes:

75,000 first, second, and third grade students participating in ACE Haiti’s “Read Haiti Project” serving 350 schools across 5 regions (2017-2020) with support from USAID, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and an anonymous foundation partner

$27 million raised to strengthen Haitian Catholic schools

7,000 first- and second-grade students in 50 schools benefitted from ACE Haiti’s “Read to Learn” Literacy Program (2014-2016)

2,315 Catholic schools surveyed and mapped on GPS software

1,200 primary school teachers trained, benefiting over 35,000 students (2012-2016)

80 percent of Haitian dioceses benefiting from large-scale projects to support Catholic education from ACE or CRS partners
