Factors that Lead to Low Math Computation Scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills
Purpose Statement:
This study examined the factors contributing to low math computation scores on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. This phenomenon warranted attention because of the shift in the literature towards a more balanced approach of teaching mathematics. Ensuring student mastery of basic skills is an essential piece of students’ conceptual understanding of mathematics (Gamoran, 2001; Li, 1999).
Research Questions:
What specific factors contribute to low math computation scores? Do students struggle with certain skills more than others? Is there a pattern over time that indicates specific areas of weakness? Have students been exposed to a majority of test concepts by the time the ITBS is administered?
