Current Initiatives in Haiti's Catholic Education System

The University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE), Catholic Relief Services, Haiti's Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education (CEEC), and the Congregation of Holy Cross are working together to transform Catholic education in Haiti. Under the leadership of Haiti’s Catholic bishops, in consultation with the Ministry of Education, this comprehensive initiative entails:

A comprehensive assessment of the country’s estimated 2,200 Catholic schools. This rich diagnostic portrait has informed the development of action plans for raising quality, increasing access, and strengthening governance. The partners are currently finalizing the action plans and preparing to implement the proposed improvements.

Improving teacher formation. ACE is supporting the Congregation of Holy Cross in developing a model teacher certification program that will provide rigorous formation for Haitian secondary school teachers utilizing international best practices and leveraging technology.

Following the 2010 earthquake, Notre Dame and ACE supported the rebuilding of the Basil Moreau School, a Holy Cross primary and high school in Port-au-Prince.
