Gender–based Math Classes: Do They Improve the Learning Environment?

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of this action research was to more formally study the effects of gender- based classes on the classroom learning environment. The primary focus of this action research paper was to determine if instituting gender-based math classes in eighth grade affected the student learning environment at Our Mother of Sorrows. Specific attention was given to issues of student participation, confidence, and sense of community.

Research Questions:

How has instituting gender-based math classes in eighth grade affected the student learning environment at OMOS? How has student participation changed as a result of instituting gender-based classes? How has student confidence in math changed as a result of gender-based classes? Has the sense of community increased as a result of the gender-based classes?
