Boston, MAWhat do you hope to do/accomplish as an ACE Teacher?
I hope to serve as a strong role model for my students as both a Christian man and an impartial, tolerant observer of others' views. I want each of my students to feel comfortable sharing their unadulterated perspectives in my classroom as we navigate complex issues with precision and nuance. Finally, I would like to assist my students in their various extracurricular activities, such as Science Olympiad, and to engage fully with the community.
What experiences at your undergraduate institution helped shape your decision to pursue teaching as a possible vocation?
Volunteering at a local Catholic school, where I conducted private tutoring sessions designed for students with learning disabilities, allowed me to interact with education from a pedagogical perspective and to work in tandem with teachers. Additionally, I initiated an undergraduate seminar in the economics department, which provided me with the opportunity to craft lesson plans and put positive strategies into practice.
How do you hope to grow in your experience as an ACE Ambassador/Intern?
As an ACE ambassador, I intend to recruit students from the myriad paths and social circles which constitute Duke. Especially given the breadth of ACE nationally, I recognize the need for teachers with compelling, different skill sets to satisfy our partner schools. I hope that these interactions foster a greater appreciation for the fact that, despite our disparate abilities and interests, each individual member contributes - and is essential - to the universal body of Christ.
