Discernment Series Part 4 - Who Does the World Need Me to Be?

Often we can get stuck in thinking that vocational discernment is all about what I want and what I love. There is a lot pressure in thinking that my discernment is all on my shoulders and all about “me.”

Fr. Himes challenges us to view discernment in the light of self-gift. If discernment means continually discovering the ways to better give ourselves away, then a Christian sense of Agape (ἀγάπη) also calls us to listen to the needs of the people around us and respond. Others should have a say in what we do.

Reflection: We are meant to share the joys and talents we have received from God. What are some of the needs I see in my community? How do my joys and talents serve those around me?

To what areas would my fellow teachers, friends, family, and mentors say I should devote my passions? To what areas do I feel called?

Whatever vocation we choose, it will always involve some sacrifice. What are the sacrifices in the vocational paths I am contemplating? Are these sacrifices I feel ready to make at this time?
