How did Remick Leadership Program graduate Emmy Pusateri Robison go from saying, “I didn’t know if I felt that teaching was serving God. I thought teaching should be about serving kids” to “I found what it really means to be Catholic and to love and serve God through loving and serving others"? This transformation of spirit was only possible through what Robison describes as the “perfect storm.”

Elizabeth Charles Music to My Ears

Driving home from school after our first choir practice of the year, I called my mom to tell her how wonderfully it had gone, thrilled that our first practice had been a success. I bragged that I now had 40 students in choir, that they’d already sounded great on the first day, and that I was already looking at choir t-shirt designs when my mom interrupted.

“You know,” she said, almost laughing, “high school you would really be shocked to hear this right now. Appalled almost.”

Latest Scientific Discovery: Studying Biology is Fun

on Tuesday, 25 September 2018.

Gone are the days of young children sitting stoically at their desks memorizing scientific facts handed down from generation to generation. Science class need not be only educational, but also creative, social, and fun. That’s what Dr. Matt Kloser, the founding director of the Notre Dame Center for STEM Education, and science educator Sophie Troy Grathwol posit in their new book, Reading Nature: Engaging Biology Students With Evidence From the Living World.

The Very First Yes - Steve Camilleri

"It was after the Easter vigil. Saturday, almost midnight.

“I slipped my acceptance, that I wanted to do the program, under Fr. Scully’s door. Little did I know that the door would open. They were having an Easter celebration! It was kinda like this: ‘Oh my God! The program’s going to happen! We have someone!’ It was a really special time. It was an exciting time. It felt like the exact right thing to do,” says Steve Camilleri. There he was. ACE 1. Acceptance one.

ACE Summer 2018 in Photos

on Monday, 20 August 2018.

As the new school year begins, take a moment to look back at some of the many highlights from ACE Summer 2018.

  • First-year ACE Teaching Fellows spend part of their summer student teaching in local schools. An ACE tradition is for the second-year teachers to send them off from South Dining Hall on the first morning of their student teaching. The second-years decorate, dress up, and cheer on the (often nervous) first-years. The group photo is of all the second-years.

  • The leaders of our Notre Dame ACE Academies, our network of 11 schools in Florida, Indiana, and Arizona, gathered the week of June 25 to recharge for the year. The week featured planning, prayer, and reflection.
  • Mike Agrippina (ACE 25) will be teaching middle school language arts at San Juan del Rio Catholic School in Jacksonville this fall. Here, he’s working with a student at Navarre Middle School as part of his student teaching.
  • ACE Teaching Fellows take a break in the middle of ACE summer for a retreat at Ronora Lodge. The retreat includes large-group reflections and ACE’s famous paired walks.
