ACE to hold virtual commencement ceremony

The University of Notre Dame’s Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE) will hold its first virtual commencement ceremony on Saturday (July 11).

With large gatherings limited because of the threat of coronavirus, the ceremony will be streamed at 3 p.m. on ace.nd.edu/commencement. The ceremony will feature short remarks from Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., the president of Notre Dame.

Two graduating Teaching Fellows from the Alliance for Catholic Education have been awarded Fulbright grants. Alexis Larios and Meghan Santella will be English teaching assistants abroad during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Working Toward a More Just Society

As people who believe that we are all made in the image and likeness of God, we affirm the inherent dignity of all human life, and we stand—as disciples of Christ—against any form of bias, discrimination, hatred, and violence. The discriminatory and violent killings of George Floyd and so many others serve as a grim reminder of the racism that has plagued our nation for centuries. This reminder functions simultaneously as a sobering reality check with respect to the depth and breadth of the challenges confronting educational institutions. And this reminder is especially important for Catholic schools and educators, given our charge to teach as Jesus did and to form students who will use their gifts to serve others and work toward a more just society.

Educators are navigating unprecedented challenges, and the ENL team has heard from many of you who have questions about English learners and remote learning. We have enjoyed hearing from you during this time of transition to eLearning, and we are wrapping up our blog series with a focus on summer.

We’ve addressed many topics in past posts, including navigating communicationdelivering clear directions, inserting language supports, providing speaking opportunities, supporting older siblingsencouraging the use of home languages, and tackling the challenge of math during eLearning. Our final post is about avoiding the summer slide.
