ACE Visits Austin, TX

(March 14-17)

ACE in the Community:

We are privileged to be part of the Catholic school community in Austin. Since 2000, twenty-five ACE teachers have served in schools in the diocese. Four currently serve in two schools: San Juan Diego Catholic High School and Santa Cruz Catholic School

A member of the TexACE consortium of ACE graduate communities, the Austin ACE Advocates have had a particularly active role in the diocese. They have helped build and landscape an outdoor classroom at San Juan Diego Catholic High School, sponsored a web-casting of pastor Father Bill Wack's treadmill marathon to raise money for new ceilings at St. Ignatius Martyr Catholic School, hosted lively fundraisers, and organized masses at various parishes to promote spirituality and awareness within the community.

About the Awards

The University of Notre Dame Sorin Award for Service to Catholic Schools

The diocese of Austin has seen dramatic growth in its Catholic population in recent years and is now around 500,000 — twice what it was two decades ago — and is still on the rise. Bishop Joe S. Vásquez joined this lively community in 2010 upon appointment by Pope Benedict XVI, after serving as an Auxiliary Bishop of Galveston-Houston for eight years. He currently serves on the following committees of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops: Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis; Subcommittee on Hispanic Affairs; and the Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America.  Bishop Vásquez serves as the Episcopal Moderator of the National Catholic Association of Diocesan Directors of Hispanic Ministry (NCADDHM) and on the Steering Committee of Christian Churches Together (CCT).
