ACE in the City
The Archdiocese of New York is a valued and dynamic partner in ACE's Catholic School Advantage campaign to increase Latino student enrollments in Catholic schools.
The campaign efforts, implemented on-site by field consultant Rudy Vargas, embrace 18 archdiocesan schools and include the advancement of an innovative “madrinas” initiative to encourage respected community members in Latino neighborhoods to spread the good word about Catholic schools among local families. The program has been successful; more than 275 Hispanic and Latino elementary school students have received financial support to attend Catholic schools through Madrinas Scholarships.
New York is also home to a very active region of ACE Advocates for Catholic Schools, a network of educators, young professionals, and other supporters who strive to promote Catholic education in the New York metropolitan area.

Award Recipients
The University of Notre Dame Sorin Award for Service to Catholic Schools
Anthony and Christie de Nicola have shared their time, talents and resources throughout the course of their marriage to support the Catholic community, with a special emphasis on Catholic education for inner-city students. Mr. de Nicola is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Cardinal’s Inner City Scholarship Fund of the Archdiocese of New York, which provides tuition assistance for underprivileged children in the archdiocese’s urban schools. He has served on school planning committees for both the Archdiocese of New York as well as the Archdiocese of Newark. He is a member of numerous financial committees in the archdiocese as well as a founding board member of Brilla Academy, a new charter school devoted to the impoverished families in the Mott Haven section of The Bronx. Mrs. De Nicola, too, has served on the boards of St. Elizabeth Home School Association and the Strategic Planning Committee of Don Bosco Preparatory High School as well as donated significant time to pro-life ministry, HIV-AIDS sufferers, women’s shelters, and soup kitchens in her community. Both Mr. and Mrs. de Nicola are members of The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem and are Stewards of St. Peter in The Papal Foundation established to support the Holy Father and his works in the world.
