ACE Visits Houston, TX

(March 23-24)

ACE in the Community

ACE is privileged to have a presence in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, where Catholic schools have made significant contributions to society — to business, government, industry, education, and the Church — since 1847. Six former ACE teachers from various sites around the country (and multiple ACE Advocates) have found a home in Houston, many in the Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory School community. Cristo Rey-Houston is part of the larger Cristo Rey Network of 25 high schools around the country, many of which have welcomed numerous ACE teachers and administrators over the years.

Today there are a total of 59 Catholic schools in the Galveston-Houston Diocese. Archbishop of the Diocese of Galveston-Houston, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, has stated, "Our young scholars must be helped to understand the importance of their Catholic Identity and the deep relationship between faith and our society.  Faith formation is one of the most important ways by which Catholic Schools fulfill their commitment to the dignity of the person and the building of community."

About the Awards

The University of Notre Dame Sorin Award for Service to Catholic Schools

Maureen Hackett has been involved in philanthropy in numerous ways for the past 30 years.  She is the Past Chair of the Greater Houston Community Foundation and currently serves as a Director of the Menninger Clinic, a Trustee of the Mental Health America Foundation and a member of UT MD Anderson Cancer Center Board of Visitors. She is the President and Chair of the Nantucket Cottage Hospital Foundation and the Vice Chair of Indiana University Purdue University Center on Philanthropy. Maureen is a Trustee of the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame.

Father TJ Martinez, SJ, is founding President of one of the youngest, largest, and fastest growing Cristo Rey schools in the nation. In five short years, Father Martinez and his leadership team have grown the student population from 80 to over 450; added 135 blue-ribbon corporations so that every student has a job; have purchased a nine acre embattled facility and renovated it into an architectural award-winning 21st century educational institution; and have raised nearly $22 million to fund the operating and capital projects of the school, including a new Jesuit Residence and new Conference Center. In June of 2013, Father Martinez graduated his first class of graduates, all of whom were accepted into college.
