About the Awards

University of Notre Dame Champion for Education Award

Retired professional basketball player for the San Antonio Spurs, David Robinson (a.k.a. "the Admiral") has fostered a legacy of philanthropy in the NBA and among professional atheltes. In 1991, Robinson visited with fifth graders at Gates Elementary School in San Antonio and challenged them to finish school and go to college. He offered a $2,000 scholarship to every one of them who did. In 1998, making even better than good on his word, Robinson awarded $8,000 to each of those students who had taken up and completed his challenge. In perhaps his greatest civic and charitable achievement, David and his wife, Valerie, founded Carver Academy in San Antonio, which opened its doors in September 2001. To date, the Robinsons have donated more than $11 million to the school, which was founded in an effort to provide more opportunities for inner-city children. In 2012, Carver Academy aligned with IDEA Public Schools, a growing network of tuition-free K-12 public charter schools serving more than 15,000 students in 30 schools throughout the Rio Grande Valley, Austin and San Antonio. IDEA is committed to "College For All Children" and has sent 100% of its graduates to college for six consecutive years.

In 2011, Robinson earned a Master of Arts in Administration (with concentration in organizational development) from the University of the Incarnate Word to better "understand how businesses work and how to build them." He has since co-founded Admiral Capital Group, with the intent to "combine an interest in private equity (with) a desire to make a positive social impact with the overall goal of creating a long-term sustainable business."

Beyond his founding of Carver Academy, Robinson is well known as a philanthropist. Robinson and business partner Daniel Bassichis donate 10 percent of their profits to charitable causes.
